October News

Executive News
Here we are headed into October already. Good grief. Is anyone counting days until Christmas yet? October will be a busy month for us. Our business meeting at 7 pm on Oct. 11 will focus around three issues: our budget for the next two years, a discussion around fundraising (quilt show, raffle quilts, sales, etc.), and a review of last month's questionnaire responses. The agenda will also include the West Kootenay Quilt Conference (Rae) and tying up the loose ends for the first Guild retreat Oct. 14 -16 (Stephanie and Marj Clark). If you have a nifty new product to demo or a quick technique to show, you're very welcome to bring it along and as always we'll have show and tell. And psst, there'll be another door prize just for showing up as well as some sort of yummy treat at coffee break. The Guild retreats are shaping up to look like a lot of fun. I've had a quick glimpse of the door and game prizes Heart 'n Sole has put together for us....all I'm saying is "ooooooh" and "aaaaaah"! There are still a few spaces open for both of the retreats so the deadline for registering has been extended to the Oct. 11 business meeting, after which the folks waitlisted for their second choice may be able to sign up. Then there's also our next in-guild at 9 am on Tues Oct. 25. Irene doesn't have anything set up yet (maybe I'm wrong? if so I'll bet she tells me) so I'll be hounding her to get something/someone going before the Oct. 11 meeting. The September in-guild - Irene's crazy log cabin-ish block - was a lot of fun and more than half our members turned out for loads of laughs, great company, and a quilt block that's quick, fun and easy.
I must especially mention all the planning and work Diane Pillet has put into the instruction for our new quilters. Diane is doing a fabulous job organizing everything and everybody, and our "newbies" are in great hands. Way to go, Diane, everyone appreciates your efforts!
Some things for all of us to spend a little time thinking about future-wise:  What would we like to do for our Christmas party? Do you have an idea for or are you willing to lead a future in-guild day - don't feel restricted to quilt blocks, we can make "things" too. For example, I'm going to talk Rae into doing an in-guild on a zippered handy-dandy purse/makeup bag/whatever, and Irene was wondering if people would be interested in a departure from quilting and having an in-guild on card making. Are guild members interested in a shophop? What elements would guild members like to see in the open houses we plan for this year? How can we advertise ourselves at little or no cost (to attract new members, raise community awareness about our Guild, and raise funds through activities). Don't forget your ideas are what make the guild work and your suggestions are always welcome!
Lastly, don't forget the FOFA building is available to us every Tuesday. Even if there's nothing "formal" going on, all members are welcome to bring a project and lunch. Hanging out together is part of what it's all about!
Cheerios!
Stephanie
